Loss of Patriotism between 9/11 and Covid

Today is a dark day in the history of the United States. 9/11/2020 marks the nineteenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. Nineteen years ago, nearly four thousand people would unexpectedly be saying goodbye to their loved ones. Grabbing their last coffee from Starbucks. Listening to their last song on the radio. Tying their last tie, slipping on their last shirt, and putting on their last pair of socks.

9/11 is a depressing day, and we have not forgotten it. There will be hundreds, if not thousands, of news articles, videos, stories, an pictures that you will see today. I want to provide a different take on this whole situation.

Americans 20 years ago were entirely more patriotic than they are currently. Why?

Look around.

Millionaire athletes complain that they are being oppressed against. Government officials defend the destruction of private property and complain when people use their Constitutional rights to protect themselves. Tech giants censor information that they do not agree with. An entire race of people are being blamed for injustices that occurred over one hundred and fifty years ago. Free speech has been limited to speech that agrees with the mob. People can make time to go to their country club or to Walmart but cannot make time to vote in person.

Perhaps most importantly, Americans have turned over their Constitutional rights in exchange for the CHANCE of a ‘safe’ life. The GUARANTEED rights that we, as Americans, have are going through a metamorphosis into privileges.

Americans, after the horrific attacks on 9/11, went out and bought as many flags as they could. They met in large prayer groups. Churches overfilled as people realized how important it is to get their lives secured in Christ. Patriotism was on an all-time high with the exception of the Revolutionary War Patriots.

Yes, we did lose many, many rights during this attack. And those rights SHOULD still belong to Americans. But I want to focus on the reaction and the outcry. American forces fought hard to eventually bring justice to the architect of this attack. American flags, with their fifty stars and three colors, waved proudly from most houses and businesses. Police and firefighters were regarded as heroes. The Red Cross provided for the people without trying to send a message. The sport players had a moment of silence for lives lost rather than sitting out games in support of criminals.

America was different then. Let’s bring that America back.
